Sowing and sewing...

It's addictive - this blogging and gardening!  Blue skies and not a smidgeon of volcanic ash to be seen.

I have spent the whole weekend outdoors and it's been wonderful.  My spirits are lifted having achieved so much.  The you know what  is done - now I can have fun choosing some new plants for it.  I've got a few ideas but I will devote some time browsing around Crocus for tips and more inspiration.

In my vegetable beds, I have sown shallots and red and white onions.  I've covered them with fleece until they establish otherwise they will get dug up by the birds.

My greenhouse is full of seed trays.

Today I have sown:

  • Borlotti beans
  • French beans
  • Red peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Courgette - yellow and green
  • Sweetcorn
  • Basil
  • Ornamental gourds
  • Cucumbers

  • Sweet peas
  • Cosmos
  • Ammi major
  • Cup and saucer vines
  • Cleome
  • Salvia
  • Dill (for cut flowers)

I'd like to buy some:

  • Pumpkin
  • Delphinium
  • Golden cherry tomatoes
  • Passion flower

After a couple of slices of toast and jam with a mug of strong tea at around 5.30pm, I sat for a leisurely hour, still outside, doing some relaxing hand-quilting to finish off the day.

  1. Oh what a fabulous way to spend the day- you have been so (sew sow) busy!! I'm really enjoying sharing your garden- can I recommend a pumpkin? Rouge Vif d'Estampes- is beautiful and ticks all the boxes- its easy to grow and tastes great and looks like Cinderella's pumpkin carriage- give me a shout and I'll let you know where to get the seeds... I wish I had been as productive as you over the last week!!

  3. wow, lots of gorgeous things planted xxxx

if you want to plant some thing impressive in the you know what, then I can recommend crambe cordifolia, huge and blousy. I have to stay away from crocus - very dangerous to my credit card I find......

  5. I've done seed sowing this weekend but not quilting - yours is gorgeous as ever!

I did leave some tender seedlings out overnight on Saturday - whoops - but fortunately they didn't seem to mind too much and I did apologise to them as I stowed them back away in our tiny greenhouse. It's kill or cure here a lot of the time :-)

My Ammi Majus seedlings look weedily pathetic. I did love them last year so I may just have to bite the bullet and sow a second lot. Humph.

  6. I spent all day yesterday meaning to get out in the garden and being distracted by one thing after another. I didn't even get some sewing done!

  7. So impressed with all your seed sowing! You're way ahead of me!

And I love the colors in your quilt. I still haven't worked up the courage to use my rotary cutter...

  8. You have been productive, well done. I was feeling chuffed that I'd actually planted some spuds at the weekend (which is more than I did last year). Looking forward to seeing photographs of your garden later in the year.

  9. Definitely sounds like the perfect day to me. We've been busy sowing here too - I get all excited when the first little leaves poke through. We'll have to organise a veg swap later in the year!

  10. You are so organized! That's what I need to do today...sow my seeds. And I am with you on sitting in the garden and doing some hand-quilting. Trying to finish up my Spring into Summer quilt. It's two years old now and the quilting is almost done.
