Sad...

I spent a wakeful night worrying about Lily - looking up the links and suggestions that Lucy had left me in the comments.  I came down this morning and prepared a bowl of live yogurt and olive oil as I was convinced she was crop bound.

Unfortunately, when I went down to her early this morning, she had died in the night.  She was in the nest box and Flossie was worrying at the door.

I'm feeling guilty that I didn't spot anything earlier but I'm hoping that she didn't suffer.  Flossie seems to be quite happy going about her business at the moment, although she hasn't laid yet today.  I guess I should think about replacing Lily as I don't think hens are solitary creatures.

  3. I am so sad to hear this. I left a comment this morning on suggestions of what you could do. This happened to two of my hens in the past. They go downhill rapidly when they become ill. I would suggest that you get a replacement as when we had just one chicken she became very lonely and died within about 4 months of her companion dying. I am sure that she had a wonderful life with you and did not suffer. x

  9. Oh I am sorry! But at least it was quick and she wasn't ill for a long time. Chickens can just get poorly and die very rapidly :o( But at least she had a fantastic life with you. Lucy xxx

  13. I'm so sorry to hear about Lily - we lost our Toffee hen a few weeks back and you do feel helpless. Someone told me that hens only show they are poorly when they are really at death's door and so often there's no way to spot illnesses early on - in other words don't feel guilty as I know she'd have had a good life with you x
